How to: Install an external CD-ROM drive with parallel port interface.
Solution:
Connect EXTERNAL CD-ROM drive an external parallel port adapter and install the driver.
1) Install the external CD-ROM unit:
a) Connect the external CD-ROM device to the external parallel port adapter connector using the appropriate interconnecting cable.
NOTE: The interconnect cable should be no longer than 6 feet for trouble free performance.
b) Mark the AC adapter provided with the external CD-ROM as 'CD-ROM adapter' if not already done.
NOTE: The computer may have several devices that require AC adapters. Each device requires a certain minimal DC volt and amp value, so that the adapters are properly connected to the device they serve. It is recommended that they be identified with that device.
c) Connect the AC adapter to DC IN connector (or equivalent) of the CD-ROM.
d) Connect the AUDIO OUT socket on the external CD-ROM with the AUDIO IN socket on the multimedia card (back of the computer) with the audio cable provided, if that feature is available.
e) Plug the AC adapter into the AC line:
NOTE: If the external CD-ROM device does not have its own ON/OFF switch, plug the AC adapter into the same switchable outlet as the computer so that the CD-ROM is turned on and off whenever the computer is turned on and off.
2) Install the configuration software:
a) Restart the computer.
b) Run the installation or setup program from the installation disk provided with the CD-ROM.
c) Complete the installation as directed in the CD-ROM device user manual.
d) For MS-DOS mode support, you may have to edit AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.
NOTE 1: Refer to the CD-ROM drive user manual for installation steps for MS-DOS mode support.
NOTE 2: If your computer is configured to dual boot with Windows 95 and a previous version of MS-DOS, you may have to edit AUTOEXEC.DOS and CONFIG.DOS with the same changes you made to AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.
e) Restart Windows 95 to complete the installation.
NOTE: When Windows 95 restarts, the 'Add New Hardware' wizard, will automatically start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation of the external CD-ROM.
